Message From the President
At our last evening meeting we had two excellent talks from students who have benefited from LPS membership. Mauricio Castellanos from London South Bank University used data supplied by LPS sponsor Tullow Oil in his project and the LPS have just agreed to award Mauricio with a Student Bursary. David Hartigan from Leicester University is receiving a Student Grant from the LPS to part-fund his PhD. Last year LPS provided £5000 in student grants and bursaries under our Iain Hillier Award Scheme and, so far this year we have approved awards of £5500. This is one of the most important functions of the LPS, but we can’t do it without the support of our members and sponsors. So many thanks to all those who pay their membership fees, attend the evening events and seminars as well as persuading their managers to sponsor the LPS.
Talking of seminars don’t forget the Pressure and Sampling seminar on 13th March, it promises to be a very interesting and enjoyable event. Then on 2nd April SPWLA Distinguished Speaker Austin Boyd will be talking at our evening meeting.
It is an unfortunate fact of life that as rig rates go up, formation evaluation programmes get cut. Most of us have to work really hard to justify cutting core and running the logs we know should be run to meet the well objectives. So help is at hand. On 18th April we have a special event; Simon Stromberg from Senergy will be giving his excellent Value of Information Course at Burlington House. Because this is a course rather than a seminar, we have to restrict numbers to 20, or a first-come-first-served basis and it is all pay. Those lucky enough to get a place will learn the theory and methods behind rigorous and consistent value of information analysis. At the end of the course you will have the skills and tools for quickly calculating value of information.
All the Best
Mike Millar : LPS President
