December 2012 Newsletter
Message From the President
The LPS held their Annual General Meeting on 12th November which was well attended. The meeting highlighted a very successful year saddened by the passing of Dick Woodhouse. In memory of his loss the Dick Woodhouse “Young Professionals Award” scheme has been set up, details of which are available on the LPS website. At the meeting members agreed to set membership fees to zero for 2013 and beyond, approved last year’s minutes and accounts and agreed to the new committee for 2013. The committee is similar to last year and welcomes Mike O’Keefe who is taking on the role VP Publications. The LPS committee for 2013 will be;
- President: Mike Millar (BG)
- Past President: Adam Moss (BG)
- Treasurer: Paul Hoddinott (BG)
- Secretary: Sasthene Parker (Senergy)
- VP Technology: Iain Whyte (Tullow Oil)
- VP External Relations: Jeremy Farrow (Independent)
- VP Arrangements: Elizabeth Brown (BP)
- VP Publications: Mike O’Keefe (Schlumberger)
- VP Seminars: Ian Draper (Baker Hughes)
- VP Newsletter : Rob Leveridge (Schlumberger)
- VP Membership: Peter Fitch (Imperial College)
The AGM was followed, as tradition dictates, by an out of topic talk. This was provided by Dr. Louise Anderson on life in the extreme environment of deep-sea hydrothermal vents whichproved to be informative and entertaining.
The LPS held its second University Open-day of the year on 14th November at Imperial College, London. This was attended by over 150 students, who discussed careers with representatives from Baker Hughes, BP, Schlumberger and Shell, and listened to talks on petrophysics from academia and industry. Many thanks to Jeremy Farrow for his Stella effort in organising two events this year.
The last one day seminar of the year will be held on Thursday 6th December celebrating 70 years since the publication of the famous Archie paper “The Electrical Resistivity Log as an Aid in Determining Some Reservoir Characteristics” in the AIME Transactions. Early registrations indicate this will also be well attended with a programme that outlines a series of talks that will look at the historical context of Archie, discuss the derivation, use and misuse Archie parameters, look at some areas where Archie works and some areas where Archie doesn’t work. This will be followed by the Presidents Evening at 17:30 to be held at The Kings Head, Stafford Street, Mayfair and all members are welcome.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors from 2012. Planning is well advanced for next year’s technical programme. The New Technology Seminar will take place on Wednesday 30th January and is free to attend. This will be followed by “Shear Magic” the applications of full waveform acoustic logs, on 20th March.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Mike Millar : LPS President
