March 2018 Newsletter

Message From the President

Dear Members & Friends of the LPS,

Our 2018 technical programme continues apace with its high standards. On 22nd February we held our “Back to Basics: An introduction to Formation Evaluation”, interactive workshop. Many thanks to all those who attended and a very big thank you to the speakers who presented in such an informative and encouraging way. Planning is beginning for our next seminar, to be held in September. The topic is Seismic Rock Physics and a call for abstracts will appear on our website soon. Please put 27th September in your diary for this seminar.

Special thanks goes to John Bennett, who stepped in at short notice to give our March evening technical presentation. John’s talk was an entertaining and thought provoking view of Net-to-Gross. We also heard from Martin Gardner of UKOGC about their programme to improve the standards of operational geoscience.

For the 17th April evening meeting we have two talks, “Linking in-situ geotechnical and physical properties to geophysical surveys – a case study for a proposed windfarm at Dogger Bank” from University of Leicester PhD student, Kieran Blacker; and “High impact drilling: Chicxulub, petrophysics and cluster analysis” from Dr Erwan Le Ber, IODP Research Associate also from University of Leicester. For the 15th May evening meeting we will have a talk on “4D multi-scale imaging of steady state two-phase flow in sandstones and reactive flow in carbonates” from Catriona Reynolds, Wood Mackenzie, and Hannah Menke, Imperial College, London.

Registration for the SPWLA 59th Annual Symposium, to be held in at Old Billingsgate in London 2nd to 6th June, is now open, please go to www.spwla.com. This outstanding event will consist of eight fabulous workshops, two stunning field trips, three days of outstanding technical presentations, posters and exhibitions, and three evenings of great social events. Make sure that you are part of it.

The Symposium Student Paper contest entries have to be submitted by the end of the month, please go to www.spwla2018.com for details on how to enter. Members of the SPWLA get discounted registration for the Annual Symposium and its associated short courses, so it well worth joining our parent body.

Best Regards,

Mike Miller – LPS President
